Sabu's percussion temple





An extraordinary session with Arsenio Rodriguez (vocal) and Sabu Martinez (percussion) - on the album PALO CONGO released by Blue Note in  1957.




Louis "Sabu" Martinez moved to Sweden in 1967 where recorded with Francy Boland-Kenny Clarke big band, releasing two albums.

The Jazz Messengers

One of the most influential bebop style drummer was Art Blakey.  His band - Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers - has over 30 years influenced the young jazz musicians.

The Jazz Lab Quintet




The Jazz Lab Quintet was co-led by Gigi Gryce and the trumpeter Donald Byrd.



In the autumn of 1953 Gigi Gryce joined the Lionel Hampton Band and they  made  the  legendary European tour.  In Paris he recorded a number of sessions for the French Vogue. There was a number of changes from quartets to a small big-band, but labelled as an orchestra.

Trumpet Messengers






Donaldson Toussaint L'Ouverture Byrd II known as  Donald Byrd  was invited in December 1955 to join Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, replacing Clifford Brown and Kenny Dorham.
In 1956 he left The Jazz Messengers and went to play with John Coltrane and Sonny Rollins. In 1957 he co-founded the Jazz Lab Quintet.

Born in New Orleans, in 1962, Terence Blanchard began playing piano at the age of five and trumpet at the age of eight. He studied  at Rutgers University with jazz saxophonist Paul Jeffrey and trumpeter Bill Fielder. In the same time he was touring with Lionel Hampton Orchestra.  In 1982, his childhood friend, Wynton Marsalis, recommended Blanchard to replace him in Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. Until 1986 Blanchard was the band's trumpeter and musical director.
