Trumpet Messengers

Donaldson Toussaint L'Ouverture Byrd II known as  Donald Byrd  was invited in December 1955 to join Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, replacing Clifford Brown and Kenny Dorham.
In 1956 he left The Jazz Messengers and went to play with John Coltrane and Sonny Rollins. In 1957 he co-founded the Jazz Lab Quintet.

Born in New Orleans, in 1962, Terence Blanchard began playing piano at the age of five and trumpet at the age of eight. He studied  at Rutgers University with jazz saxophonist Paul Jeffrey and trumpeter Bill Fielder. In the same time he was touring with Lionel Hampton Orchestra.  In 1982, his childhood friend, Wynton Marsalis, recommended Blanchard to replace him in Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. Until 1986 Blanchard was the band's trumpeter and musical director.
